find out the rpm at which you get maximum power and change gear at that point
to prevent wheelshin get the best tyres you can, wider if possible and feed the clutch rather than dump it
I try to change gears when the engine will be in the maximum power range in the next gear.
So when you get to the next gear, the revs will be such that the engine won't bog down (too low) or scream its head off (too high)
