Ruth Your Questions About Hydroelectric Power Disadvantages

Ruth asks…

please enumerate the the advantages and disadvantages of hydroelectric power………..?

please answer it as soon as possible, because I need this so badly..as in right now….

admin answers:

Hi there,
disadvantages::
The dams are very expensive to build.
However, many dams are also used for flood control , so building costs can be shared.

Building a large dam will flood a very large area upstream, causing problems for fish, etc, that used to live there.

Finding a suitable site can be difficult – the impact on residents and the environment may be unacceptable.

Water quality and quantity downstream can be affected, which can have an impact on plant life.

Advantages:
Once the dam is built, the energy is virtually free.

No waste or pollution produced.

Much more reliable than wind, solar or wave power.

Water can be stored above the dam ready to cope with peaks in demand.

Hydro-electric power stations can increase to full power very quickly, unlike other power stations.

Electricity can be generated constantly.

Ken Your Questions About Hydroelectric Power Disadvantages

Ken asks…

what is a disadvantage of using the hydroelectric power plant? any help will be very much appreciated!love slc?

i need help please! pretty pretty please! love sarah chrest

admin answers:

The build-up of water rots the trees, which makes bacteria that reacts with the rock formations and poisons the water with mercury.

The massive buildup of water also destroys habitat and can cause catastrophic flood damage if the dam breaks.

David asks…

Hydroelectric Power Plant?

What are some available resources?
What are a few environmental advantages/disadvantages, and what are some economic factors?
Thankee icon biggrin Your Questions About Hydroelectric Power Disadvantages

admin answers:

Resources – water, you gotta have water and it needs to fall from a height to drive the generators.

Advantage – clean (no greenhouse gases), reservoirs provide water during dry periods.
Disadvantages – water source must be constant (only about 10% of US power comes from hydro) and you have to dam up a river or two.

Economics – well, it takes a lot of concrete (generally) but the structure tends to lasty a while. (See the Hoover Dam)

Joseph Your Questions About Hydroelectric Power Disadvantages

Joseph asks…

Are there any problems with hydropower?

I am doing a research project for science, and I need some websites that will tell me the disadvantages of having a hydroelectric power plant and a water wheel.

Thanks :]

admin answers:

The greatest disadvantages relate to the interruption to the normal flow of the river. This will influence the life forms which use the river, and result in siltation problems. Usually it results in reduced water flow downstream, which causes narrowing of the channel, invasion of the channel by new plant species, possible algal problems and a break in fish migration habits. The new dam will also destroy an environment amd habitats which are irreplaceable, and may also displace humans.

The advantages include cheap power, a permanent water supply, creation of a possible recreation area, providing a possible drought water supply to the river downstream.

The links below will explain further.

Paul Your Questions About Hydroelectric Power Disadvantages

Paul asks…

Advantages & disadvantages from hydroelectricity?

What are the advantages/disadvantages of producing electricity from hydroelectric sources, compared to electricity from coal power stations?

admin answers:

Well for me, so much in advantage… Why? First, because we are abundant in water, second, getting a location of the hydroelectricity plant is easy, we just find any falls that’s water is overflowing like niagara or angel…..

PHYSICAL SCIENCE PLEASE HELP!!!!?

Your town is considering building a hydroelectric power plant. Describe at least two advantages and two disadvantages of this project. Based on these factors would you recommend that they continue with the project or consider other options?

Done.

Betty Your Questions About Hydroelectric Power Disadvantages

Betty asks…

Please help! Physics!?

Your town is considering building a hydroelectric power plant. Describe at least two advantages and two disadvantages of this project. Based on these factors would you recommend that they continue with the project or consider other options?

admin answers:

Advantages :
A source of electricity
Electricity that is largely carbon neutral

Disadvantages:
Considerable cost of the development, which could be spent on other projects e.g. Hospital, library etc.
Environmental cost of the scheme due to the large reservoir created behind it, which alters the ecosystem, usually for the worse.

From the information you have given, it is impossible to give a recommendation as to whether it should be built or not, because that depends on external factors, such as the availability of other sources of power generation; the possibility of people currently living in the proposed reservoir area behind the dam etc.

As we can see, dams in the world are built in some areas, and are not built in others, therefore more data is needed to come up with the conclusion.

Laura Your Questions About Hydroelectric Power Disadvantages

Laura asks…

Renewable and non-renewable?

Ok i need(one place in the world it is used, advantages and disadvantages) of the following

coal
oil
natural gas
Nuclear power
solar power
Hydroelectric power
Geothermal power
tidal power
biomass

admin answers:

Most of them are renewable and mostly used to produce electricity.

Mary Your Questions About Hydroelectric Power Disadvantages

Mary asks…

renewable and non-renewable?

Ok I have asked this before but i don’t think people get what i mean.

I need one disadvantage and one advantage for each of the following. Not if its an advantage or disadvantage.

coal
oil
natural gas
Nuclear power
solar power
Hydroelectric power
Geothermal power
tidal power
biomass

admin answers:

Coal:
- a cheap energy source; it is not expensive to extract or to use to produce electricity
- ecological problems: the burning of coal is very polluting – sulphur – produces too much (CO2) – greenhouse gas

Oil:
- one of the most abundant energy resources – liguid is easy to transport
- burning leads to carbon emissions and drilling endangers the environment and ecosystem – transportation (by ship) can lead to spills

Natural gas:
- burns clean compared to cola, oil (less polluting)
- not a renewable source – recivering is very costly

Nuclear power:
- clear power with no atmospheric emissions
- potential of high risk disaster (Chernobyl)

Solar power:
- very abundant energy resource
- at this time extremely costly and cumbersome

Hydroelectric power:
- expands irrigation and provides drinking water
- dam building is very costly and is restricted to areas with flowing water

Geothermal power:
- no pollution and can be directly used to heat or produce electricity (thus very cheap)
- not available in many locations

Tidal power:
- once you’ve built it, tidal power is free and it produces no greenhouse gases or other waste
- only provides power when the tide is actually moving in or out – about 10 hrs /day

Biomass:
- available throughout the world and inexhaustible fuel source
- contribute a great deal to global warming and particulate pollution if directly burned

Interesting that you have left out Wind Power since it is a continuous source of clean of energy with no atmospheric emissions. It does use a lot of land for the wind mills and wind velocity must be over 7 mph.
