Onyx Pharmaceuticals and Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation... SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. and NORWALK, Conn., Aug. 3, 2011 /PRNewswire/

SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. and NORWALK, Conn., Aug. 3, 2011 /PRNewswire/ — Onyx Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (Nasdaq: ONXX) and the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation (MMRF) today announced the initiation of an expanded access program for carfilzomib, a selective, next-generation proteasome inhibitor. the Carfilzomib Myeloma Access Program (C-MAP) will include eligible patients in the United States (U.S.) with relapsed and refractory multiple myeloma.  Expanded access programs make investigational medicines still being evaluated in clinical trials available to patients for whom no satisfactory treatment alternatives are available. the C-MAP protocol has been reviewed by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the company has received authorization to initiate the study.

“In recognition of the immediate needs of patients with relapsed and refractory multiple myeloma who have limited treatment options available to them, Onyx and the MMRF are offering this expanded access program with the hope of potentially helping patients who may benefit from carfilzomib prior to FDA approval in the U.S.,” said N. Anthony Coles, M.D., President and Chief Executive Officer of Onyx Pharmaceuticals.  ”Onyx plans to submit a new Drug Application (NDA) for accelerated approval of carfilzomib with the goal of making this promising new therapy commercially available as quickly as possible.”

“New approaches to treating multiple myeloma are needed since nearly all patients will eventually relapse and no longer respond to currently available therapies,” said Kathy Giusti, Founder and Chief Executive Officer of the MMRF and a multiple myeloma patient. “The MMRF has established the clinical platform necessary for this innovative program to support multiple myeloma patients and their healthcare providers at a critical point in their care.  Through this collaboration, the MMRF and Onyx have developed the first expanded access program for patients with advanced multiple myeloma in nearly six years. by making carfilzomib available through C-MAP, we believe we are addressing a critical need in the treatment of patients with relapsed and refractory multiple myeloma.”

Under C-MAP, approximately 40 medical centers across the U.S. will enroll patients, including institutions and investigators who have previous experience administering carfilzomib in clinical trials, member institutions of the Multiple Myeloma Research Consortium (MMRC) and newly identified institutions. Clinical sites are expected to open beginning this month through the end of 2011. Onyx and MMRF are making every effort to ensure geographic balance of sites to provide as convenient access as possible to patients.

About the Carfilzomib Myeloma Access Program

C-MAP is a multi-center study of carfilzomib for patients with relapsed and refractory multiple myeloma.  the trial is a single-arm study, meaning carfilzomib is not being compared to another anti-cancer therapy. the study is designed to provide access to patients who have progressive disease, are refractory to at least one prior therapy, have received at least four prior therapies for multiple myeloma and are not eligible for any other company-sponsored carfilzomib trial in the U.S.  Refractory disease is defined as progression during therapy or within 60 days after completion of therapy. Interested patients should ask their physician to call Onyx Medical Information at 1-877-ONYX-1-2-1 (1-877-669-9121) or visit www.onyxtrials.com to learn if they are eligible for the trial.

D-Dalus – an entirely new genre of aircraft arrives

My first thought was that it was a vastly improved ducted relative of the spinning wing (1930). but from the info it seems like Centrifugal fans. it would be nice to have more details on the principles of flight involved. “contra-rotating cylindrical turbines” suggests it is more like the later. are we talking turbos like in cars? Seems like superchargers move more air. The 2,200 RPM sounds more like a fan and less obnoxious sounding than a turbo/supercharger. The article also does not say where the air intake is. That seems like a major omission to me. oh well, I guess we will hear more about it.

If it really is efficient, powerful, maneuverable, and easy to control, it might work in some sort of “jetpack” form. there was the scaling comment though…so maybe not.

The actual numbers provided do not sound heavy lifting yet. Everything starts small. I hope it is the real deal…it looks very interesting.

I second the request for a video!

Sounds great, but I’ll believe it when I see it. I’ve been burnt enough times by articles on gizmag making something sound like magic, only to come back the next week and debunk the myth.

Anyone remember that new dynamic ratio gearbox that was supposed to radically change the automotive industry forever? no? That’s because it turned out to be over-hyped crap.

Excellent points Mindbreaker. and in retrospect, exciting as this is it lacks the helicopter’s ability to autorotate and glide from engine failure. not that it should not still be persued however. Voith Schneider indeed.

Amost silent? I find that hard to believe. Anyone knows that air moving at high velocities and volumes make shitloads of noise regardless of how its created. Nontheless it sounds like something worth following to see how it developes.

comment D Dalus an entirely new genre of aircraft arrives Terry Penrose – June 21, 2011 @ 07:51 pm PDT

I wonder if its similar in concept to the Fanwing idea by Pat Peebles. That has great potential as well, if thought about from “outside the box” of traditional aviation design. I hope this advent shakes things up enough in aviation to finally get us up out of the gridlock traffic (and those blasted signal lights!) icon smile D Dalus an entirely new genre of aircraft arrives Get that ol’ FAA on board early, folks!

here’s a video of the original concept – by an italian inventor .

but the thing can’t autorotate and land without engines – so it’s an UAV only technology for now .

What is the best way to accelerate with a car and use its highest engine power?

1306378902 97 What is the best way to accelerate with a car and use its highest engine power?

i mean just tell me how to change the gears and when?
and how to start with maximum power and less tyre spinning?

find out the rpm at which you get maximum power and change gear at that point

to prevent wheelshin get the best tyres you can, wider if possible and feed the clutch rather than dump it

I try to change gears when the engine will be in the maximum power range in the next gear.
So when you get to the next gear, the revs will be such that the engine won't bog down (too low) or scream its head off (too high)

It doesn't work. I hope this helps.

Dimmick Inn tunes up for its block party

1305965418 74 Dimmick Inn tunes up for its block partyBy JESSICA COHEN may 13, 2011

What would Eliza Pinchot think of all the Bacchanalian commotion? In 1828, the wife of Cyrille Pinchot, a refugee soldier from Napoleon’s defeated army, had her garden where the Dimmick Inn now stands.

But during the Milford Music Festival for the past two years, Mike Jorgenson, the Dimmick’s owner, has had block parties on the stretch of Broad Street running alongside the restaurant — bands, beer, food, and music. This year, on Saturday, June 18, will be the third annual block party as part of the annual Milford Music Festival running that weekend.

Typically the music has been classic rock, top 40, and blues. for this block party, says Jorgenson, Dead Level and another, yet undetermined band, will play. In addition to the standard material, says Jorgenson, “they’ll do an acoustical set that’s more personal, with both covers and originals. more intimate, sit down with the crowd.”

Russ Cohen leads the band, but by day does carpentry.

“He’s our in-house carpenter. He does everything for us,” says Jorgenson. These days Cohen is redoing the upstairs rooms.

Jorgenson himself was in the carpenter’s union and drove a fuel oil truck in New York City. He grew up in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn.

“A lot of people from the city live here,” he says. “Our block party reminds them of block parties going on all the time in the city.”

His parents moved to Milford in 1985. after his father had an accident on Milford Road, when a tree fell on his car seriously injuring his spine, Jorgenson and his two brothers moved to Milford, too.

His youngest brother, Andrew, who went to chef school, was previously a chef at Luxia in Manhattan’s theater district, but now owns Jorgenson’s Deli on Broad Street, where he added specialty salads to the menu. their middle brother, John, is in the mortgage and banking business.

“Like every kid, I wanted to run my own business,” says Mike Jorgenson. “I had a vision of being in the hospitality business and serving people well.”

What he’ll serve at the block party will be hamburgers, hot dogs and sausage and pepper sandwiches. Plus, Coors Lite is sponsoring a beer truck.

Also being served at the music festival will be free ice cream, along with live music at Belle Reve on Saturday afternoon, music in the courtyard at the Broad Street Alley Shops and in the evenings at many Milford restaurants, including Laurel Villa, Waterwheel Cafe, Hotel Fauch
