Why ECO Cars Have a Better Fuel Economy

There are many different reasons why cars that are considered ECO have better fuel economy than regular fuel-powered vehicles. ECO cars are powered by revolutionary new methods that are specifically designed to cut down on the amount of fuel used. Whether the manufacturers had the environment, the pocketbooks of their consumers, or simply this brand new, burgeoning corner of the market in mind, their excellent fuel economy is the one factor that binds all ECO cars together.

The revolutionary new methods invented to power ECO cars may be used on their own in some models or combined with more common technology in other models to create a hybrid ECO car. One example of a hybrid vehicle is the kind that has both a fuel-powered motor and a lithium-ion battery. For short distances, this car can run on just the battery, cutting the fuel costs down to almost nothing. When the battery runs low, the car can switch to fuel power and keep going without having to stop for a recharge. When technologies are combined, the resulting hybrids can have many of the strengths of both technologies and fewer weaknesses.

Part of the reason for the improved fuel economy on certain ECO vehicles can be attributed to the lighter weight of some ECO models. Sometimes all that needs to be done to make an ECO vehicle is to simply build a design that is smaller and lighter than anything else on the road. A vehicle that is lighter and smaller tends to use less energy. Fuel costs are often drastically reduced in direct relation to the weight of the car.

Another method of making an ECO vehicle that consumes less fuel is to design a more efficient power system. With these types of vehicles, the body and frame can be as heavy as needed. As long as the power system is efficient enough, the overall energy use of the car will be reduced no matter how much it weighs.

Plug-ins and all-electric vehicles are ECO cars that get better fuel economy due to the cheaper price of electricity. All-electric vehicles are powered purely by electricity, using zero fossil fuels of any kind. Plug-ins may use minor amounts of petrol or diesel in emergencies but are powered mostly by electric charges. Because electricity is many times cheaper than petrol or diesel, these types of cars can go anywhere for a lot less of a cost than most regular vehicles. Some all-electrics and plug-ins are even as much as ten times cheaper to run than regular petrol-powered automobiles.

Another way that some ECO cars get better fuel economy is through an alternate form of transmission. Where regular vehicles have certain set gears within which the car always has to operate, a new form of transmission has been gaining popularity in which the gear ratio is variable instead of constant. This transmission, known as continuously variable transmission or CVT, allows the car to always run at the peak of its fuel economy capacity and get the most efficient gear ratio no matter at what speed it is currently driving. Cars with continuously variable transmission usually get as much as 8% better fuel economy and can have reduced emissions of up to a tenth less than a regular vehicle.

In whatever form it takes, ECO technology is slowly engulfing the world of automobiles. Fuel economy is important to most if not all consumers, and whether an ECO car takes the shape of a plug-in, an all-electric, a hybrid, or an alternative fuel vehicle, if it can get from one place to another for cheaper than its competitors, it is usually welcomed with open arms.

How to save money on fuel expenses – 7 top tips for reducing your cars fuel costs

1 Tyres;

Keeping your tyres inflated to the right pressure will reduce drag and wear & tear and in doing so will reduce your fuel consumption a little. Your vehicle should have a notice or plate that tells you the correct tyre pressures, this is often found in one of the door frames, if not then have a search around your vehicle and you should be able to find it. Alternatively if you still have the owners handbook the details will be in there.

2 Driving style;

Harsh acceleration and braking causes unnecessary wear to your engine, as does high revs or heavy stop-start traffic. Unfortunately heavy traffic cannot always be avoided but you could try an alternative route or drive at a different time if possible , avoiding rush-hour traffic for example. Instead of cruising (eg. on the motorway) at 70 or 80 mph, give yourself a little more time for your journey, and cruise at 60 mph; the drive will not only be more comfortable and less stressful but will reduce your fuel consumption considerably, plus here in the UK all HGV vehicles are restricted by law to a maximum speed of 60 mph so get in the same lane and you will not be in anybody’s way. You could also reduce your fuel consumption more by positioning yourself behind a HGV – ie. in the slipstream – but not too close, we don’t want any tailgating do we? Allow your vehicle to pick up speed gradually to reduce pressure to your engine and give yourself plenty of slowing down and stopping distance to allow your vehicle to decelerate gradually. Slow and steady will reduce your fuel bill quite considerably.

3 Exterior trimmings;

Vehicles with spoilers, skirts and various other protrusions are less streamlined and as a result will undoubtedly give less mpg. Plus such trimmings also add unnecessary weight to your vehicle. They may look good but will definitely not improve your cars performance or economy.

4 Unnecessary weight;

It is so easy to perhaps do a little work on your car and then throw the tools into the boot, I know as I’ve done it hundreds of times, but tools are heavy and will add extra weight to your vehicle and so make it less economical; so don’t do it, put them away properly. The same applies to anything you choose to carry in your vehicle and not just tools. Only carry what is absolutely necessary and help reduce your fuel consumption that little bit more.

5 Air conditioning;

It is a commonly known fact that using air-conditioning in your vehicle causes you to use more fuel. Only use the air-con in extreme circumstances. Much better to put down a window or two (or all if you like), and maybe even open the sunroof if you’re fortunate enough to have one; the wind that gets into your vehicle whilst you are moving will help to keep you cool. You could always dress down a little for comfort also – take off your coat or jacket, wear lightweight clothing etc.

6 Change your vehicle;

If you can afford to do so you could always update or downgrade your vehicle. A more modern car will be generally more economical, more aerodynamic, and often more luxurious. Whereas a smaller car will be cheaper to insure, cheaper to tax, and give better fuel consumption, although you may have to sacrifice a little luxury. There is also an increasing range of hybrid cars becoming available along with vehicles that run on alternative fuels such as electric and LPG, these will help to reduce your fuel expenses considerably. We actually have two cars; a seven-seater and a small hatchback. As I was the only person who drove my car and then only to and from work I downgraded from a luxury estate to a small hatchback (more than enough for me to travel to work and back, or for just myself and my good lady to go out in and thus saving a fortune on fuel and other costs). We upgraded my wife’s car to a 7-seater so that on day trips and holidays with the family we only needed to use one vehicle rather than both, this may seem like false economy but over time has saved us a lot of money. If you have a large family why not invest in a multi-passenger vehicle such as a 7-seater, this will allow you to get everybody in one trip instead of making multiple journeys. If, like me, you have a large family and two drivers and are all going out together a 7-seater will get them all in and save both drivers from having to drive the entire journey in separate vehicles; using this method you would also be able to travel further as you could share the driving and reduce the risk of just one driver becoming over-tired. The other advantage of course is that you would only be paying to run one vehicle rather than two.

7 Service and maintenance;

Keeping your vehicle regularly serviced and maintained will keep it in peak performance and so reduce your fuel costs. A clean exterior will also help the streamlining properties of your car, whereas a clean engine will reduce the wear & tear.

Although each individual tip may not help dramatically, combine them all together and you could save more than you think!

D-Dalus – an entirely new genre of aircraft arrives

My first thought was that it was a vastly improved ducted relative of the spinning wing (1930). but from the info it seems like Centrifugal fans. it would be nice to have more details on the principles of flight involved. “contra-rotating cylindrical turbines” suggests it is more like the later. are we talking turbos like in cars? Seems like superchargers move more air. The 2,200 RPM sounds more like a fan and less obnoxious sounding than a turbo/supercharger. The article also does not say where the air intake is. That seems like a major omission to me. oh well, I guess we will hear more about it.

If it really is efficient, powerful, maneuverable, and easy to control, it might work in some sort of “jetpack” form. there was the scaling comment though…so maybe not.

The actual numbers provided do not sound heavy lifting yet. Everything starts small. I hope it is the real deal…it looks very interesting.

I second the request for a video!

Sounds great, but I’ll believe it when I see it. I’ve been burnt enough times by articles on gizmag making something sound like magic, only to come back the next week and debunk the myth.

Anyone remember that new dynamic ratio gearbox that was supposed to radically change the automotive industry forever? no? That’s because it turned out to be over-hyped crap.

Question by patrick: Can Barrack Obama alternative fuel provide infra structure as a bailout solution? Using our tax money for us?

Why spend our tax money to make fuel burning cars when it’s our money. India has air cars on the road. Honda has hydrogen cars with borohydrid fuel storage and tank containment as well. Hydrogen production is so simple. I do it all the time in lab using only 12 volt electricity or even pulsed Dc current. How far will the American people go before they stand on their own two feet?

Alternative energy source for cars

When it comes to energy shortage, a series of problems caused by lack of liquidity in the crude oil are becoming worse and worse. As we all know, petroleum belongs to fossil fuels, whose formation is a slow process, requiring thousands of years. Consequently, the price of fuels continues to increase as time passes. Moreover, the emission of Carbon Dioxide has resulted in green house effect. Therefore, alternative energy sources for cares are getting much attention among car-owners.

Alternative energy sources include renewable options, like wind energy, solar energy and geothermal energy. Even though it is not possible to replace fossil fuels completely with alternative sources, using them in whichever way probably will save energy for future, while meeting the requirements for the present generation. In a world, renewable energy deriving from resources of nature has a profound effect on protection of the environment.

Alternative fuels, known as non-conventional fuels, are any materials or substances that can be used as a fuel and are not made from gas, such as water. It seems to be a better solution to environmental issues, especially global warming. Water power automobile are considered as the latest craze in the automotive world. Thousands of people around the world, in America, Europe, Australia, Asia and Africa are converting their automobile and trucks to save fuel with water.

In fact, water power automobile is the so-called Hydrogen fuel cell cars. It’s cheap clean fuel. With global fuel rapidly reaching the highest consumption level, its price is increasing at an unbelievable rate. No doubt, if there is a lower demand for fuel, it can lead to a drop in oil prices.

It is reported that by the year 2008, seven percent of the total energy supply in the United States was contributed by renewable sources. The use of renewable energy has increased significantly in the last few decades, obviously.

Speaking about renewable energy disadvantages, there are just a few of them. The main concern is non-availability under certain conditions. For instance, because of bad weather or low water season, it is difficult to get a lot of energy. These are some of the circumstances that highly affect the production of renewable energy.

All in all, renewable energy advantages outweigh the drawbacks. More awareness programs, like water power automobile, are required to make the public understand about the benefits of renewable energy resources. It is the beast solution for solving energy crisis, which is main issue in today’s date. Thus, it is high time that we should switch on to natural resources as far as possible.

The market will change here and there mainly because everyone is so whipped into a frenzy for an easy answer. Thanks to the irresponsible media passing on the lies of peak oil, Thanks to politicians being too stupid to know something that’s bad…like Ethanol. Thanks to the democratic party demonizing big oil..when big oil is the company supplying your gas in the first price.
Truth be told, we have limited choices. To effectively supply a city..or state, you’ll have to go Nuclear if you worry about the fradulent global warming hype. There’s clean coal process’s out there, but everyone has had it drilled into their head that coal is bad, who know’s where that will go.
Some are clinging to windmills and T Boone Picken…you can’t power a car with air, you can’t supply boats, ships, planes, etc. It has been experimented with for decades and we still only produce 1% power with windmills. Not to mention that the speed has been reduced to make sure this “clearn” source isn’t a fancy bird chopper, not to mention it only works when there’s wind, you still need oil products for lubricants and now they are mentioning “windmill syndrome” since the existence of a populus near transmission line power has always been under investigation for causing ailments. Then there’s the reale Estate for the wind farm. Don’t get me started.
The flaws with Ethanol is well known unless people have their head buried in the ground.
Solar is good…but…look at the price of solar panels today.
As for fossil fuels, if you want to go green, go for it, have fun, but No one should be forcing people to go green, change their lifestyle etc for something that hasn’t been proven. But my play for greener going on vehicles would have to be vertical growth system and bioreactors. They created various fuels based on the algea and formula they use for nutrients. Essentially making vegitable oil type fuels…which have been proven to work in deisels. I can’t speak to the power loss or gain, I have no clue if such a vehicle can make it up a 40% incline or pull a trailer, but I do know that there are companies out there with working products, we just need infrastructure to support it and an incentive to the people to trade their reliable working vehicle in for something that works just as good.
I got an electric mower for instance. Ya, it gets the job done…eventually. I pop the breaker on it a few times….but no one can convince me its as good as a gas mower. The gas mower is much more powerful, but the electric is more reliable. No spark plugs, no hard starting, etc.

Hydrogen Fuel Cars – Do they Exist?

Article by Gargi Nath

Did you know that hydrogen fuel cars are already on the streets of many first world countries? General Motors and Ford already launched hydrogen fuel cars and currently, BMW has created a series of the same type of vehicle. General Motors already have thirteen hydrogen fuel cars roaming the streets of Washington, including 6 minivans.

Ford is still in the process of manufacturing ‘Focus’. Other car manufacturers namely Honda, Toyota, DaimlerChrysler, and Nissan already have vehicles in the Army and even with the public.

With the launching of hydrogen fuel cars, many car owners no longer have to worry about gas mileage. If you want to save money now, yet you can’t afford the hydrogen fuel cars, have your existing car converted. Of course, it can cost a little but the benefits are priceless.

By 2010, General Motors will launch alternative hydrogen fuel cars. Although the cars use alternative hydrogen fuel, the price is just like that of internal combustion vehicles. GM and Shell are now partners; the latter has created stations for hydrogen fuel to meet the demand for the alternative fuel. The two giant companies projected that for every 200,000 hydrogen fuel cars, 300 stations are needed.

If you walk the streets of Europe, you will hardly notice that there are some hydrogen fuel buses roaming their streets. DaimlerChrysler introduced the said buses in 2004. You can find the buses in Barcelona, Amsterdam, London, Hamburg, Madrid, Luxemburg, Reykjavik, Porto, Stuttgart, and Stockholm. The buses function well regardless of the weather.

In fact, the buses provide excellent transportation during hot summers and cold winters; as well as in the hilly regions and flatlands. You can find hydrogen stations in the 7 major cities of Europe and each station is equipped with the necessary equipments like the electrolysis tools. Water is used to create the fuel for the stations.

An ethanol fuel car can also use hydrogen fuel cells. Ethanol has water and this is where the hydrogen is derived. If you use this alternative, you can improve gas mileage and at the same time supply the cells with the needed hydrogen. This type of vehicle is called water power car or hybrid car and it can run using ethanol or hydrogen.

If you want a clean and abundant energy source, choose hydrogen fuel cars. As long as you have a water source, you can use it to power your hydrogen car. At present, the fuel cells are quite large but developers are now trying to make it more efficient and more reliable. Just imagine the very first computers which were large but after several years, small versions were soon invented and launched. It will not be shocking if hydrogen fuel technology will rapidly develop.

One thing’s for sure, hydrogen fuel cars do exist. Some people are still unaware of this fact but in the coming years, these cars will dominate the streets. Here’s good news to everyone, if you want to address the global warming problem, have your cars converted if it is feasible.

Check your locality if you can find a hydrogen station. This is a very important decision that you have to make, so be sure that you will have no regrets. So far, users of hydrogen fuel cars do not have any regrets and with the advanced technology of today, improvements are on their way. So look out for the cars of the future.

You can get greater speed with less push down on the accelerator even when you are driving up hillAnother thing that happened on the very first day with the HHO Technology system is that the engine became very smooth all of a sudden. It took place after about 5 or 6 miles of driving. At the beginning we thought it was temporary and attributable to the weather or some other random element But instead of reverting the vehicle just kept getting smoother and smoother! We have now determined that this is due to hydrogen cleaning out the carbon deposits while the car is driving. Result, fewer and smaller carbon deposits and other contamination left behind by unburned gasoline.Discover

Electric Cars (EVs), Alternative Fuel Vehicles

Due to the increasing levels of air pollution, the vehicle manufacturing industry is beginning to consider developing alternative fuel vehicles. Alternative fuel vehicles are those that do not use traditional fuel, such as petroleum, in order to operate. It is a known fact that petroleum, when fueled to an internal combustion engine can produce emissions consisted of harmful gases. Reducing, if not totally replacing, the use of petroleum in the energy conversion will strongly impact the levels of pollution in the air.

Electric cars are just among the alternative fuel vehicles that are already running on today’s roads. The name itself signifies that it is fueled by electricity and not by petroleum. However, it does not fully reduce carbon compound emissions completely, because the battery it uses also produces carbon emissions. Nevertheless these cars can reduce the rate of carbon emissions by as much as 30%.

Electric cars have a high potential of reducing massive amount of air pollution within ten years of continuously replacing petroleum-generated cars. Some prominent car manufacturing industries, such as Mitsubishi, are beginning to design electric cars for future investments. Car developers in highly developed cities like Indianapolis estimate that a third of the 900 million petroleum-generated cars will be replaced with electric cars in 2020.

As an example, 40 million alternative fuel vehicles are already on the run. Most of these vehicles are electricity-generated and do not produce any smoke. Nevertheless, Mitsubishi Indianapolis electric cars still have some significant disadvantages, including expensive battery price and limited output endurance.

Despite that, EVs are found with low running costs and maintenance. Unlike an internal combustion engine that has hundreds of parts, an EV’s engine only has 5 major parts which requires maintenance. Mitsubishi Indianapolis car designers have been working on lowering the maintenance requirement for EVs by perfecting the integrating these five parts.

Another good feature of an EV is its high energy efficiency. Compared to an internal combustion engine which normally wastes a large percentage of energy by converting it to heat, the electrical energy produced by the battery of an EV is purely converted, with less waste, to mechanical energy. Mitsubishi Indianapolis car designers just need to develop battery switch technology on EVs for extended driving power.
