If we dedicated our scientists to fixing this problem, we could be energy independent in just a matter of a few years, why fixing the global warming problem at the same time, right?
We know it is the most viable option, yet 0bama took away government subsidies when he took office. Why?
We already have ways of using hydrogen, but the problem is how to use it in a safe and economical way. Another problem is distribution.
If you look at the automobile industry, many car manufacturers are / have been spending a lot of money on r&d for some time now, especially the Japanese. There are already prototype cars. But hydrogen is not very safe, very expensive currently and there are only a handful of petrol stations that stock hydrogen. I don’t think Obama taking off subsidies will hold back advances in technologies.
You might as well have them work on a perpetual motion machine. it takes too much energy to produce hydrogen for it to be an economical fuel source.

"In a recent study, fuel cell expert Ulf Bossel explains that a hydrogen economy is a wasteful economy. the large amount of energy required to isolate hydrogen from natural compounds (water, natural gas, biomass), package the light gas by compression or liquefaction, transfer the energy carrier to the user, plus the energy lost when it is converted to useful electricity with fuel cells, leaves around 25% for practical use — an unacceptable value to run an economy in a sustainable future. only niche applications like submarines and spacecraft might use hydrogen.
“More energy is needed to isolate hydrogen from natural compounds than can ever be recovered from its use,” Bossel explains to PhysOrg.com.
… the laws of physics are eternal and cannot be changed with additional research, venture capital or majority votes.”

Because Los Alamos scientists are more adept at the job.
Hydrogen is not an energy source. There are no hydrogen mines. we make hydrogen with electricity. Electricity comes from coal, oil, and natural gas.
There was a time when we put alot of Scientists in a room and told them to Build something, they ending up building the A-Bomb, So it might not be a good Idea
It would certainly be a greater benefit to mankind then putting a man on Mars.
Because its too expensive
They are busy with Muslim outreach.
Because Big Oil would not allow it.
